In THORNICO we seek to establish a widespread and global commitment to responsible business practices in order to support the transparency and interconnectedness of our businesses all over the world. You can read more about THORNICO's commitments and development in the Company Karma Report below.
If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done." Those wise words were said by the martial artist and movie star Bruce Lee, and I think it pretty much sums up our modus operandi on CSR to this date.
We have tried a variety of things and initiatives in THORNICO and across companies, and this especially related to the middle pillar under our Company Karma strategy, namely Branding & Commuinication. So quite a lot has been done, but to paraphrase Bruce’s quote, without thinking too much about it. Subsequently, we have decided to implement more strategic thinking to our CSR initiatives, including an increased focus on CO2.
Where are we now, what is our current watermark, where do we want to go, and how do we measure our progress? These are some of our focus points going forward. To help us with both the thinking and the doing part, we have teamed up with some specialists within this field - who will help us on a THORNICO Holding level as well as in our individual group companies - the result of which will hopefully be visible in our 2021 report as the ones to come.
During 2020, we have also had good sparring with Jakob Silas Lund, the founder of the NGO Play31 with whom we have collaborated for several years in hummel® and who has also worked for Amnesty as well as for UN Women New York. In 2020, we also had the pleasure to be founding partners together with Sustainia and a number of very qualified individuals and institutions of the think tank, Blueprint for Denmark, through which we, as a large number of professors, experts, a former Danish minister for climate and energy and others looked into COVID-19 and how this pandemic has changed our behaviour in a very short time; something that otherwise would have taken decades.
If the same kind of urgency was felt related to climate change, what kind of behavioural changes could then be implemented?
Albert Einstein famously said; “The more I learn, the more I realise how much I don’t know”. To stay with the quotes, I think this also very much goes for the work with CSR and sustainability.
We have worked with CSR and related initiatives and projects since 2001, but still there is so much work ahead of us and there is so much we do not now and that we can do better. With not only doing, but also by thinking about what to do, and with the help of others as mentioned earlier, we strive to take a giant leap within the following years.
Hopefully and wilfully, I can write that we have come far on our journey on this page in one year’s time.
All the best and good energy, Christian
